Abu Dhabi's new $1bn medical city now more than 90% completed

"Abu Dhabi General Services company (Musanada), in cooperation with Abu Dhabi Health Services company (SEHA), has announced that construction work on the AED4 billion ($1 billion) Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City project is more than 90 percent completed.Hamad Khalifa Al Murar, Musanada’s acting CEO, said 91 percent of the external works and landscapes and 91 percent of the utility buildings and electricity and air conditioning plants have now been finished.

He added in comments published by state news agency WAM that electricity and air conditioning systems are being tested on an ongoing basis, while 59 percent of the medical equipment has been tested and installed.The medical city will accommodate 732 hospital beds, two royal and 36 VIP suites, and will become a centre for treatment of trauma and incurable diseases, WAM previously reported.

The medical city, which will employ more than 2,000 people, is envisioned to be as one of the largest intensive care medical facilities in the region, featuring several operating rooms and departments for emergency, intensive care, maternity, a medical research centre.

A total of 132 beds will be used for cases referred to intensive care, including a neonatal intensive care unit, as well as an advanced wound care centre, 18 operation rooms, a delivery and prematurity department, in addition to various medical specialties.The medical city, located at Al Mafraq area in Abu Dhabi, stretches over 300,000 square metres and includes parking facilities that can accommodate 1,610 cars. It also has two helipads.

"The company is following a specific and clear schedule to deliver this vital project in line with highest international standards and specifications in coordination with Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, our strategic partner," said Al Murar."This forms part of Musanada and Seha’s efforts... to provide high quality healthcare services to UAE nationals and residents within the context and the objectives of Abu Dhabi Plan," he added.
